Scott Ashcraft

Scott is an AMS alumnus from 1981, and his son, Isaac, is a 2013 alumnus. Scott is an archaeologist working for the National Forest Service.

Margaret Borrego Brainard

Margaret Borrego is a teacher and curriculum consultant who has worked in K-12 and Higher Education for 40 years. She began her career as a special education teacher, ran an alternative school and adult education center in Western North Carolina, and has worked as a teacher educator in Chicago, Seattle, New York and Greensboro, NC for the past 20 years. Recently, Margaret has been an administrator in a Montessori middle school and has designed a middle school teacher education program.

Jane Carter
BA in Religion, Earlham College
M.Ed in Secondary Education Mathematics, Arcadia University

Jane is recently retired from her position as the Associate Head of School at New Garden Friends School in Greensboro, NC. Her 27 years of work in education include teaching Mathematics grades 5-10, serving as Middle School Head and Associate Head of School. She is active at New Garden Friends Meeting where she served as Religious Education Director for four years in the early nineties. NGFS has hosted AMS on some of their 18 day field trips where Jane has had some interaction with students and faculty in the past.

Mary Dart
BA in Math, Oberlin College
MA, PhD in Folklore & Ethnomusicology, Indiana University

Mary is recently retired from her position at George School in Pennsylvania. Prior to working at George School Mary was a full-time teacher at Arthur Morgan School for 10 years. She stated, “At AMS I felt like I was doing good in the world without using too many of the world’s resources. I am happy to be associated with the school once again.”

Faison Covington
BA, Queens University
MSW of Social Work, University of South Carolina

Faison is a psychotherapist in private practice. She serves children over six years of age, adolescents, and adults in Charlotte, NC.

Lynda Kinnane
BS, MPH, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Lynda is a public health professional that has worked for the Toe River Health District for many years as a nutritionist, health educator and administrator, serving as health director for four years. She works hard at creating communities where being healthy is easy. She also gardens, runs, reads , hikes, cooks and has a small crossword puzzle addiction. Her son, Andrew Kaluzynski, attended AMS and counts it as one of the best decisions he ever made.

Jenifer Morgan

Jenifer Morgan is a retired social worker and community organizer. In her 40 year career, she worked in advocacy, volunteer coordination, office management, fundraising, public relations, and casework for organizations including Headstart, Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, NC Developmental Evaluation Centers, Yancey County Board of Education, Celo Press, and Rural Southern Voice for Peace. After sheltering Salvadoran and Guatemalan refugees in the 1980’s, she initiated a Sister City relationship between Asheville and San Cristobal in Chiapas, Mexico in 1996. She is a member of Celo Community, daughter of Elizabeth and Ernest Morgan, and her children, Eric and Linda, are 1970’s alumni of AMS.

Rob Pulleyn
BA, Sociology and Anthropology, Lake Forest College in Illinois,
MA, Sociology, The University of New Mexico

Rob is a ceramicist and shows frequently in the region. He has been a filmmaker and tapestry weaver. He founded and was the publisher of Fiberarts Magazine and Lark Books for thirty years prior to selling his business to Sterling Publishing/Barnes and Noble. He has served on the boards of Planned Parenthood, Asheville Art Museum, and Penland School of Crafts. His daughter was involved in Camp Celo which brought him into contact with AMS. Besides his daughter, he is also a single adoptive parent to three other children.

Irene Purser
AMI Primary Montessori Cert., Atlanta, GA
AMI Elementary Montessori Cert., Milwaukee, WI

After seven years as the Finance Coordinator for Arthur Morgan School (AMS), and 26 years in education, Irene retired in 2014. Before coming to AMS, Irene had the opportunity to garner many years of experience in business, finance and Montessori education. She taught Montessori, worked in wilderness programs and was head of a large Montessori school in Atlanta for 8 years. Previously, Irene enjoyed 20 years in business that included business consulting and entrepreneurship. In 1985, Irene sold her business to begin working for children and for education reform.

Molly Rouse
BA in Latin American Studies, Carleton College
MAA, Applied Cultural Anthropology, University of Maryland

Molly is an AMS alumnus who, when a student, always thought she would come back to AMS as an instructor. She currently works as a Postpartum Doula/New Parent Instructor in Asheville and is raising her two children.

Lisa Schultz
B.A. English Literature, University of New Hampshire
Montessori Primary Certification

Lisa is retired as Head of School at Spruce Pine Montessori School. She was a Montessori teacher for twenty years and spent the first twenty years of her work life in human resources management with both non-profit and private corporations and partnerships. She lives just across the river from AMS and served on staff there for five years, including three years as a house parent with her husband Bill.

Eric J. Witherspoon
B.A. Education, Antioch College, Yellow Springs, OH

Eric Witherspoon is a Software Developer and former Teacher who lives right next to AMS. His background includes participation in Friends meeting and process, Outdoor Education, Alternative Education, Automating Financial Transactions for Amazon.com, and is a member of the Celo community. He is currently developing an online lesson planning tool, profileplanner.com.
