We work hard to create <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arthurmorganschool.org\/higher-self-esteem-through-positive-body-image\/\"><strong>a safe emotional space<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0that helps each student feel:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>confident being themselves<\/li>\n<li>safe to explore their identity, and<\/li>\n<li>inspired to discover their place in society.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As members of our community, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arthurmorganschool.org\/community-building-through-gift-giving\/\">students discover their natural talents<\/a><\/strong> and individual strengths. \u00a0They build on these parts of their personality to one day make a difference in the world.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cols-wrapper cols-2 cols-default\">\n<div class=\"col\">\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2>Family-style Boarding Houses<\/h2>\n<p>Boarding students live in family-style homes with four to five students and two houseparents. Each house is a community of its own, setting rules, planning outings and problem-solving disagreements as they arise. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arthurmorganschool.org\/alternative-middle-school\/\"><strong>Consensus decision making<\/strong><\/a> allows each student to feel like they have a voice in how their home is run. They share meals together, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arthurmorganschool.org\/why-chores-are-good\/\"><strong>work cooperatively to cook, clean and maintain the home<\/strong><\/a>, and play together every evening.<\/p>\n<p>Using family-style houses creates that feeling of family where students feel a sense of belonging. Young people are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arthurmorganschool.org\/how-to-deal-with-bullies-in-middle-school\/\"><strong>constantly worrying about who they are<\/strong><\/a>, how they fit in with their peers and who they will eventually be. This emotionally chaotic journey is filled with \u00a0new temptations, unexpected feelings and physical changes. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arthurmorganschool.org\/how-to-deal-with-bullies-in-middle-school\/\"><strong>We assign every student a social advisor<\/strong><\/a> to guide them through these challenges.<\/p>\n<p>Advisor\/advisee groups are comprised of two students and one staff that meet once a week. Groups stay together all year, emphasizing the importance of building lasting connections. Staff advisors provide a mature and sympathetic perspective as they serve as advocates, mentors, trusted companions, and role models. Having this safe and reliable space to talk about their emotions provides students with the message that they are seen and valued.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cols-wrapper cols-2 cols-default\">\n<div class=\"col\">\n<h2>Shared Work<\/h2>\n<p>Young people crave real responsibility. Chores provide valuable opportunities for students to learn the practical life skills of taking care of themselves and their surroundings. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arthurmorganschool.org\/where-do-ams-students-go-after-they-leave-ams\/\">When students leave our junior boarding school, they feel self-sufficient<\/a><\/strong> and are able to help others who need it. By doing community service regularly, our students grow into adults who find joy caring for the people and places around them. They learn to give of themselves to make the world better. Examples of community service include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>maintaining mountain trails<\/li>\n<li>conducting roadside cleanup<\/li>\n<li>planting a garden at a local day program for adults with disabilities<\/li>\n<li>volunteering with local nonprofit organizations like <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.habitat.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Habitat for Humanity<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Personal Growth<\/h2>\n<p>As part of educating the whole child, AMS makes our students\u2019 personal growth a priority. In the boarding houses, we provide daily mentorship on personal hygiene, positive sleep habits, nutrition and time management. At school, we offer a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arthurmorganschool.org\/teaching-consent-to-middle-schoolers\/\"><strong>personal growth class<\/strong><\/a> that covers topics ranging from personal identity to peer relationships to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arthurmorganschool.org\/how-to-deal-with-the-emotional-changes-of-puberty\/\">sexual education<\/a><\/strong>.
