As they learn to ask questions, our teachers provide students with the tools and confidence to find answers. At <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arthurmorganschool.org\/\"><strong>Arthur Morgan School<\/strong><\/a>, our students become independent lifelong learners.<\/p>\n<p>In the classroom, our teachers provide the following elements as part of our Montessori middle school program:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>individualized instruction<\/li>\n<li>interdisciplinary courses that tie in social, political and environmental topics<\/li>\n<li>experiential learning opportunities that foster emotional connections<\/li>\n<li>mixed age classes<\/li>\n<li>individual and group work<\/li>\n<li>free time to to pursue art, music, engineering and business projects<\/li>\n<li>prepared spaces for specialized activities like art and theater<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cols-wrapper cols-2 cols-default\">\n<div class=\"col\">\n<h2>Internships<\/h2>\n<p>AMS students see their education in action. <a href=\"http:\/\/denmark.dk\/en\/meet-the-danes\/great-danes\/writers\/nikolai-frederik-severin-grundtvig\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Educator Nikolai Grundtvig<\/strong><\/a> believed that education must be related to everyday life, by combining our academics with the meaningful work of the school, our program helps <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arthurmorganschool.org\/teaching-scientific-literacy-this-field-trip-unit\/\"><strong>students recognize the real world connections<\/strong> <\/a>of their studies. They feel empowered as they encounter actual problems and become a part of discovering solutions.<\/p>\n<p>Internships are offered in the garden, kitchen, outdoor program, and maintenance of the school. Therefore, we give our students choices in determining which classes we teach and what classes they take. Although some courses like math and Spanish are determined by skill level, students express their preferences for language arts, internships, art classes, electives, committees, and trips.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cols-wrapper cols-2 cols-default\">\n<div class=\"col\">\n<h2>Small Hands-on Classes<\/h2>\n<p>Learning is a lot more than just an accumulation of facts and techniques. It\u2019s also about exploration and critical thinking. Our Montessori middle school&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.headsup.org\/benefits-of-mixed-age-classrooms\/\"><strong>mixed-age classes<\/strong><\/a> of 4-10 students create safe spaces where students can feel confident asking questions and voicing their opinions. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arthurmorganschool.org\/reasons-to-send-your-child-to-boarding-school\/\">Teachers can focus on individual needs<\/a><\/strong> and offer a variety of experiences that cater to each student\u2019s sense of curiosity and interests.<\/p>\n<h2>Academic Advisors<\/h2>\n<p>Education should inspire both curiosity and discipline, laying the foundations for a life of inquiry and creative problem solving. Advisors advocate for their students\u2019 academic needs and facilitate communication between parents and teachers. Our academic open houses and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arthurmorganschool.org\/student-led-conferences\/\"><strong>student-led conferences<\/strong><\/a> provide our students with an opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and share their academic achievements. As they present what they have learned in their classes to their peers and parents, students reflect on their successes, reinforce the material within themselves, and receive recognition from their community.<\/p>\n<h2>Evaluations<\/h2>\n<p>In keeping with the Montessori middle school\u2019s philosophy that <a href=\"https:\/\/napavalleyregister.com\/community\/star\/news\/opinion\/mailbag\/education-is-a-process-not-a-product\/article_ec1fd5c2-d43b-11e0-b4a4-001cc4c002e0.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>education is a process and not a product<\/strong><\/a>, our students receive detailed evaluations in place of grades. Because of the strong relationships teachers form with their students, they are able to evaluate and encourage each student based on extensive knowledge of their specific interests, challenges, and goals.
