The Social Studies program begins with students examining
their own lives in the context of history and of today’s world.
Students develop their writing and research skills through journal and
letter writing, interviews, and written research projects. The class
utilizes books, periodicals, radio, the Internet and video
documentaries as resources. Invited speakers, reenactments and field
trips round out the program.
Specific areas of study include U.S. and North Carolina history,
genealogy, global restructuring and conflict, world geography, the
labor movement, the civil rights movement, current events, social
justice, and women’s issues. Often we incorporate aspects of our Social
Studies curriculum into our 18-day
field trips and strive to help students build a bridge
between the classroom and life in the larger world.
