This class is equivalent
to health and sex education. Developed by the Unitarian
Universalist church, the aim of the curriculum is to help
children become more knowledgeable about themselves.
Female and male instructors work with the entire student body. When
appropriate, the students may be divided into smaller groups.
In addition to the above class, the Advisor/Advisee groups are a
support system designed to specifically meet the needs of each
individual student. These groups, consisting of two students and one
staff member, meet every week for a special extended lunch. Staff
advisors serve as advocates, mentors, trusted companions, and role
models to their advisees. They often help if there is any
miscommunication between houseparents and a student, and communicate
concerns or staff meeting decisions to the parents of their advisees.
These groups will remain the same throughout the year emphasizing the
importance of building lasting connections. Students often report that
their relationship with their Advisor is one of the most meaningful
ones they have at AMS.
