The Arthur Morgan School (AMS), located at the foot of the Black Mountains in western North Carolina, is an innovative, co-educational boarding and day school for 27 students in grades 7, 8 and 9. These students and a dozen staff learn by living together, sharing work, play, study and decision making. AMS is a community dedicated to supporting individuality while teaching harmony with others. The central aim of the school is to help each student be a caring, confident and responsible young person. The academic program includes integrated studies, mathematics, personal growth, electives and internships. Class sizes are small. Students are encouraged to make choices about their own learning, and to identify connections between their studies and the world around them. A daily work program helps students develop hands-on skills. The program also includes three-, six- and eight-day outdoor trips, an eighteen-day service work field trip, and weekly all-school meetings.
